My apologies, MIke. I missed out a bit.After starting Gedit, click on the "Open" tab at the top left of the window. This will display a file-manager-like list of files in your home directory.
Now you click Ctrl+h and you will see lots of extra files prefixed with a "." - these are the "hidden" files. You can toggle Ctrl+h to show/hide hidden files.
