There are various things involved here.- Software that is not open source — binary blobs, as they are sometimes called. That would include drivers for Nvidia cards or Broadcom wifi chips. Most distros include that, but a few don't. At present Debian is one of the few. If you really need a driver to get things working, you have to down-load it and put it on a USB stick — the Debian installer will see it and install it! As from the next release, Debian will stop that nonsense.
