Update, I've done it. I didn't want to wait another day because windows was once more failing to boot up. I showed my daughter mint from the live USB, and she liked the look of it, so it's now installed! I no longer have windows 
I am shocked at how little time it's taken me to get up and running, literally half an hour, and that includes the updates! I'm extremely impressed, and all I need to sort out now is the software side of things.
