Sorry I didn't see this earlier. I have been back to this win 10 machine and downloaded unetbootin. I have made another live USB from the failed rufus one. I have been back to the laptop and started (almost finished) installing and have met with the exact same problem "the grub package failed to install". This is almost a week I have been trying this and at my age I don't think it worth the hassle.
I will shut down the laptop and try and install Pep10 without the internet. I will let you know.
