I wonder if you have the wrong idea about Live DVD/USBs?  You can try a distro on your laptop without installation just to see if you like it.  At the end of a trial, closing down the laptop will leave you with an unchanged HDD - there will be no files from the Live DVD left on it. 
If you do like a particular distro then you can install it by clicking on an icon whilst running the Live DVD - and you will have the option of installing either alongside your present OS or instead of it.
