I found this Microsoft article which may help explain the situation from their perspective

& I'll add that Samba is used by many enterprises/companies, so is considered suitable for production use.

There are other options you could look at too, FTP and Webdav being two of the obvious alternatives. And/or  applications like SeaFile or Own/Next-Cloud could (briefly discussed in another post within ...
