Xubuntu, XFCE lightweight desktop

Xubuntu is an elegant and easy to use operating system. Xubuntu comes with Xfce, which is a stable, light and configurable desktop environment. Xubuntu is perfect for those who want the most out of their desktops, laptops and netbooks with a modern look and enough features for efficient, daily usage. It works well on older hardware too.

Pros

  • Lightweight interface that uses less memory and cpu than most other spins
  • Clean and easy to use user interface
  • Good selection of easy to use third-party applications
  • Menus and interface in general are very configurable

Cons

  • User Interface can be a little ‘quirky’
  • Some built-in applications like the file manager are maybe not as comprehensive as those available with other spins
  • Tools and accessories are sometimes a little less polished than the competition
  • Interoperability with Gtk and KDE is ‘interesting’ in places
Author Review
  • Ease of use for beginners
  • Ease of installation
  • Ease of and variety software installation
  • Overall Stability
  • Overall performance
4.3

Summary

This really is recommended for older hardware or systems with memory constraints (less than 8G for example) , but overall it’s a little less polished than Ubuntu or KUbuntu.
