We’ve been using Digital Ocean for hosting since, well … maybe 10 years or so. Generally speaking been very happy with the service, very reliable, really nice user interface and and every-expanding product range. (and a lot cheaper than “other” big names you might have heard of)

That said, in recent times they’ve started to feel a little more expensive while at the same time not offering any more for the money, so I’ve been looking around at the competition.

After much indecision I’ve just brought a new server online with a company called Hetzner after many recommendations from other happy punters. First impressions, while the user interface doesn’t seem quite as polished, and the range of products (that I generally don’t need) may not be quite so wide, for the same price I’m now getting 2xCPU, 2xstorage, and 4xmemory, which feels like a pretty good deal.

Not sure how it’ll work out in the medium term, but I’ve just managed to extend my new shiny SDN powered Cluster onto it and despite a slightly slower ping time (the server is in Germany rather than London) it’s looking pretty good.
